So my friends and I are going to work on a very unique project this summer,we are going to try and make a video game.
Info:
Name:Devil's Crusade
Genre:RPG,Adventure
Setting:1091-1097,First Crusade
System:Possibly PC or Xbox 360(Live Marketplace)
Summary:The story follows a protagonist named William,a man with a troubled past and no hope of a future. When volunteers are asked to join in the First Crusade,William, seeking redemption of his sins decides to join.He fights like every other warrior on the battlefield, until the powers of the supernatural become involved...

We are still working on a complete plot,so far we have a rough draft. We will be working on it over the summer with help from software designers that I have connections with.
I will edit as the story further progresses.
*Our helpful software designer friends worked on the Ghostbusters videogames.

I've personally had many attempts at making games, it truly is fun. I never got off of concept though, never found a decent fps program. It's good you have a group working on this, if you all stay organized and channel your ideas in a Think box, you should do great! Your plot does sound decent so far, but if it's a TB-RPG, you may want to stretch the story a little more, and change the world some so it seems more like a fantasy, rather than a documentary. Good luck!

I wanna see the plot. make it in the tragic hero style which was first used by aristotle or some shit. people eat tragic story line up like butter in kentucky. add subtle ester eggs and inuendos and even real worl meanings. make it epic

All our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Life's but a walking shadow a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing

There are many rpg types so be more specific . e.g. Skyrim is more FPS rpg(focuses more on action), Shin megami Tensei Persona4 is more FF type jrpg(alot is put on the story and dungeon crawling).
i developed a game off java myself once in code.. and i broke a keyboard becouse my patience is low sometimes
get youreself a engine if possible (if you want skyrim like, i'd reccomend you UDK Engine - free and easy to use too.)

I like the plot. Very original, and it's largely unexplored territory for a game.

However, as someone who is currently dabbling in this field and has done so in the past, I have the following to say...
  • You don't seem to have a good idea of how the game will be. Will it be single-player only? What genre will it be in? 2D or 3D graphics? What input does it require to be played (e.g. would a controller be necessary for it to be playable)?
  • You sound like you're going to be using XNA to develop this. Don't. Your "software designer friends" developed with the extremely locked-in XNA framework, effectively limiting themselves to two platforms--Windows and Xbox. Both of which are dying as platforms. Use SDL instead, or another framework at the very least. Having a game available on both platforms using XNA is downright impossible for a small indie team. Other frameworks like SDL are far better. You can always use the OpenGL API directly--which is harder to use but almost entirely free of any bugs. Furthermore, it works on just about any platform on the planet (Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox, PS3, goddamn Android and iOS...).
  • It doesn't sound like you have any programming skill whatsoever. If you do, I'm sorry, but you're aiming pretty high. Game programming is by far the hardest of all types. Those software designers will probably ask for money. You need to choose a language to program in, preferably use a framework or game engine and set yourself some targets. You need to think through the features before you start, or the code will become very unclean, very quickly, and you'll probably be inclined to give up. Think of the structure of the program and every feature you want to include in it, including both gameplay and graphics (especially if the graphics are 3D).
  • Are you planning to make money from this? Or do you just want as many people as possible to play it?

Man I feel like I heared this William dude and his troubled past for a thousand times already. Why not for once an original hero?
Make him like you and me. Let's call him Ebenezer. Ebenezer is a lazy, daydreaming cunt who drinks his brains out at night and won't even be sober at day. One day he loses all his lands and shit in a dice game and now his best bet is to join dem crusades, rape, pillage, be drunk with the fellow knight bros and in general, have some crusader fun.
Sounds not that serious? Well start of like that and then make it more seriously as the game progresses. Let him see scary shit and say lines like "Oh god I won't ever drink again" or so. Then put him in front of a mirror, in conflict with himself, he is torn between "fuck this world, imma just go and drink this whole paranormal shit out of my brain" and "alright let's step it up" and then he does the latter, shaves off his dirty beard and who was once Ebenezer the cunt becomes Ebenezer the god damn temple knight of d00m.
Something like that. Just please no more sad William trying to redeem his sins.

Edit: it's not like most of them were like William anyways. Those crusaders were some serious assholes. But I can see them fighting the devil more than I can see William doing so.
Ok no more hating on William, I'm done.

Well,William is not alone in redemption. Most crusaders went for redemption.

Debatable. Our preconception of the crusaders very much depend on historiography. Nevertheless, it is generally agreed upon that many crusaders truly believed in their mission when they set off from Europe, but quickly forgot all that when they found rich Egyptian cities (and Constantinople!) to pillage.

Anyways, are you going to answer to the points I posed? I personally think based on those assumptions that you really have no idea about what you're getting into. Trust me, I've been there. The only thing that will make your life easier is the fact that the storyline is linear and probably won't have multiple endings and stuff.

Those people were the ones that slaughtered women and children when they took Jerusalem. That's not how you redeem your sins.
They might write that shit in history books, but the truth is, that times do not actually differ so much as one might think.
Some years from now on the history books will tell about the brave American soldiers, who went into Iraq to defend their country, when most of them are just the bottom of society who can't do shit besides killing. Most of them were just bored and didn't know what to do with their lifes, so they joined the army. Same goes for the crusades, it was an adventure. Full of raping and killing innocents. As war always is.
