Ricky Carmichael's "Age of New Imperialism"
Earlier, I got a chance to meet with avid cartographer Ricky Carmichael to go over his most recent scenario, "Age of New Imperialism". Taking place in the Age of Imperialism, approximately 1890-1900, it is a full earth scenario centered around the growing desire of powerful nations to take overseas territories. I liked it, and have played it a few times myself (which should say something]since I never play scenarios). So check it out below, and enjoy!
Firstly, here is some background information regarding the map.
Zitat:
Chancellor Sultan (United States):thank yuo ricky for your time
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): no, thank you
Chancellor Sultan (United States): so please tell me, what prompted you to start making a map such as this?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): Well originally it was more of a turn of the century map
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): but when i got into that it kinda just didnt feel right
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): so I turned it into this
Chancellor Sultan (United States): what felt wrong about it?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): well I just didnt see a huge point in making it
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): it got kinda boring and i was like: well either i trash this map or turn it into something good
Chancellor Sultan (United States): as far as your borders, how did u go about your research?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): Well, it isnt easy to do so since I dont have a specific year
Chancellor Sultan (United States): yea, sounds tricky
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): some of it was guessing
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): and wikipedia, of course
Chancellor Sultan (United States): wikipedia op
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): yea
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): but i tried to do my research
Cartographer's Choice
Zitat:
Chancellor Sultan (United States): speaking of borders, which ones are your favorite?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): well that is an easy one
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): the boer republics in south africa
Chancellor Sultan (United States): why?
Zitat: Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): i just kinda think they look cool, plus i have never seen any other map with the boer republics included
Chancellor Sultan (United States): yea, i think you might be right lol
Logistics
Zitat:
Chancellor Sultan (United States): so as far as the balance, how much effort do u put in to making sure its evenly balance?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): well, balancing is kinda hit or miss
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): its one of those things im working on as i go
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): i did at one point count all reinforcements in europe
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): wasnt easy
Units
Zitat: Chancellor Sultan (United States): hah. well moving ont your units
Chancellor Sultan (United States): it seems you chose to go with basic all around ones, right?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): as for units, another work in progress
Zitat: Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): i do plan to add more units in the near future
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): but these will get me through my first few plays
Chancellor Sultan (United States): i see, how detailed do you plan to get?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): well, as for units, i see them as being more generic
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): 1939 saw many custom units
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): but i feel like this will be more about the map and the play
The Maps Appearance
North America
South America
Africa
Europe
Asia
Oceania and the Pacific
Concluding Thoughts
Zitat: Chancellor Sultan (United States): do have any hopes on how many plays you might get at the end of next year?
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): well, by next year i hope to be top scenario
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): but well
Ricky Carmichael (Deutsh Kaiserreich): that probably wont happen, so ill say like some big milestone around 300
Chancellor Sultan (United States): nice! well i hope that does happen!
I hope you now get a better understanding as to what this scenario/map from ricky is all about. I've seen it go up a few times already, but I hope he can get more plays from here on out, since its truly a great and enjoyable scenario

how is this different from playing my 1914 scenario, or adog's 1914 map or aramen's 1914.

Or because showing boring maps that require no skills and garbage borders is fun.
